It is clear from looking at historical data and Asian betting market moves within Italy’s premier football league Serie A, that some matches approaching season end appear to be bent. At this backend point in the Serie A season league position means everything, in the battle not only for the league title but also entry into top European competitions. Safely avoiding relegation to the second tier competition is also vitally important. This is a time when the motivation adjustment for all sides can fluctuate wildly and the results/betting market of these matches can be driven significantly by motivation alone. However on occasion the laclustre play (defense and attack) of one side warrants questions being asked, if in fact genuine motivation is all that is involved?
To this end it is clear some inter club "back scratching" has occurred on occasion, whereby teams with nothing to play for will formally agree to allow a win for an opponent if they themselves have little to gain from the win. Asian betting markets, which have already priced in a motivation adjustment, will on occasion move uncharacteristically again as information on the intentions of each side reaches those who will act upon it.
At the most sinister end of the scale is the fact that illegal payments will be made to club officials and players to facilitate this behavior, whilst a less sinister reward may be a favor owed to the other team going forward when they themselves are placed in a similar position on the league table and need to “organize” a result (hard to enforce and based on trust).
In Italy's Serie A some clubs have long-standing agreements and loyalty toward each other, when dealing with the issues of promotion, relegation and winning entry into other lucrative competitions. The below link discusses in detail one of the longest standing examples of "gemellaggio" (loyalty) between the two Serie A opponents Fiorentina and Torino. A literal translation of gamellaggio is "the pairing of towns or cities from geographically distinct areas in order to foster human contact and cultural links"
There is a clear history of friendship between Fiorentina and Torino and in a recent match between the two clubs the issue of gemellaggio was raised again.
It was clear by viewing the reaction of the liquid Asian betting markets that a significant adjustment for motivation of over +1.5ball had been made for Torino, with the thought that Fiorentina would in fact maintain the "gemellaggio" between the clubs and allow Torino to win the match, thus forcing Milan (a despised rival) to miss a UEFA Champions League berth.
After a significant move for Torino in early Asian markets, alarm bells went off at many global bookmakers concerned that gemellaggio could be at play again. This concern forced the removal of the match from their offering. However the concerns proved to be false as fears of gemellaggio eased when the Asian market on match day moved back toward Fiorentina and the match finishing 2-2 (Torino missing a penalty at 90')
